Though December 1st is a work- and school day for most, that does nothing to stop the party that heralds the opening of Darrow's finest (only) ski lodge.

From morning to night, the gathering goes on, an informal party marked by a variety of welcoming options from Kagura's staff. With reservations and rooms open, snow on the slopes for those who wished to ski, and a pond for those more inclined to skate, Kagura welcomes Darrow's residents to enjoy the beginning of the festive season. The fireplaces in the foyer burn bright, bedecked with boughs of holly, and the cheerful staff happily provide assistance and hot beverage to any and all.

It's an opening not unlike any other for Kagura. With that comes the promise of their mysterious and most persistent guest, the mistletoe which no member of the staff seems to recall having hung up. Neither do any of them have any explanation but a shrug and a light apology for any inconvenience when asked how it moves. Yet with or without explanation — and with no help from the staff for those trapped — the mistletoe springs up here and there throughout the lodge, sprigs of the plant snaring unsuspecting guests within their perimeter to await a kiss. But then, that, like so much else about Kagura, is purely tradition, and what is a danger to some is an enticement for others. If nothing else, it's hard to resist the call of novelty.

[ Happy holidays from the Kagura staff! The hotel is officially open for the season. ]

They would have been preparing for the Idol Awards at home.

It hasn't been a full year since Rumi arrived in Darrow. It hasn't even been half a year. Even so, one of the many things she associates with winter is award show season, all the stages they would have been planning and preparing, the countless hours of practice. She's still not used to this life. She hasn't had this much free time since she was a little girl, if even then. It's nice to get some rest, she won't pretend it isn't, but it's also unexpectedly stressful. She's not used to having nothing to do.

At home, she'd kept busy because her jobs demanded it and because when her thoughts were on work, it was easier to push all her fears aside. They'd still crowd her at night, all her worries about what her loved ones would think if they knew she was half-demon, and only exhausting herself completely was enough to let her sleep properly, but she could at least mostly shut them out of her waking hours. Here, she finds a lot to do, but it lacks the structure of work. There's no one to be accountable to but herself, no one to drag her out of her thoughts when she's working out alone.

No one to stop her from sitting down on a bench, looking out over the sea, her cellphone in her hands. The wind whips at her purple hair, tied back in its customary braid, and she swipes at the screen, scrolling through her photo gallery.

She saved a lot of videos and pictures back then, feeling foolishly like any other girl her age. It's not like she's never been a stan herself, and she has her share of favorites she's fangirled over like anyone else, but this was different and much, much stupider. She felt it then and she feels it now, how absurd it was to hold onto mementos of someone she actually knew. She's not sure if she's thankful she did or not. All it does is prolong the hurt, but she couldn't bear it, she thinks, if she forgot Jinu, too, the sound of his voice, his eyes. No TikTok reel captures the way he'd looked at her when they were alone, but she likes the clips from the audience who were there during the Saja Boys' busking performance, polished and sugar sweet but so much more real than the candy-coated gloss of the MV, which she has saved, too.

She's just poking a bruise now. She knows that. But there's a certain comfort in the pain, too, a concrete reminder that it was real. He was real.

They were real.

Rumi huffs out a quiet laugh and sings along, voice far sweeter than the upbeat pop tune calls for. "When you're in my arms, I hold you so tight. Can't let go, no, no, not tonight. 지금 당장 날 봐, 시간 없잖아, 넌 내꺼야, 이미 알고 있잖아."

[ Catch Rumi nursing baby's first heartbreak on the boardwalk. Feel free to recognize her from her busking performances or the like. She could use the distraction and friends (current and new). Open until this says otherwise. ]

It helps to think of it as a mission. It's a hard thing to keep up when Ruslan knows it's not true, but it helps a little anyway, a small comfort in the idea of the familiar. When he was younger and their pack was brand-new, still stitching itself together, he was a little too focused on these things. He didn't yet know how to have fun, how to let go of the tension and fear of being taken captive once more. Reconnaissance was reassuring. Later on, it became a skill he could use to help his people, less of a personal crutch. Under Khan's leadership, he quickly realized his talent as a scout. He turns to those habits now to give him something to focus on.

Ruslan trusts Solon. He knows perfectly well that their Nightball rivalry is still alive and that Solon's as likely to toss barbs at his pack as most of the other vampires (some of them are far readier). They're unlikely ever to be true friends. But he also knows that, in the heat of battle, Solon saved Camill's life, at risk to his own. They stood for a common cause, even if they had different reasons to do so. When it comes to something as serious as this, when he has nothing to gain from lying, Ruslan knows he can trust the other wolf to be honest with him.

He wishes that weren't the case, really. The idea of being so far from his pack is upsetting. If he had some indication that Solon lied, that there's a way home if he looks for it, he could at least focus on that, but as it is, all Ruslan can do is wander Darrow, trying to learn it and to hide the occasional sniffle. He might rely on pragmatism to get by, but he can't help that he's still an emotional young pup. He didn't have a home for a really long time. Being without one now is scary.

Darrow is probably about the same size as Riverfield, he gauges, maybe a little bigger, but not by much. It's a city, if on the smaller side, and most of it doesn't stand out as especially unusual. He wanders down the central street, curious, taking it all in. The one thing that he notices as particularly strange — and especially worrisome — is the strong presence of vampires. They aren't even hiding, not all of them, and he can smell them in places all over the city. "I don't like this," he says softly, standing outside a bookstore and looking over the magazines and papers displayed on the rack outside. There are mentions of the mayor that note that he's a vampire in passing, as if this were ordinary and expected. He can't help thinking of what they found in Automnal. Though the mayor there was human, the city itself was a living trap.

He's on edge by the time he reaches the outskirts of town, clutching the packet he retrieved from the train station. At least the wooded area just beyond the edge of Darrow smells safe. It's clear that the werewolves here are outnumbered by the vampires, but that's nothing new to Ruslan. Stepping past the treeline, he looks for somewhere safe to hide his things. He's readying himself to change out of his clothes and into his wolf form when he hears something nearby. Cocking his head, he listens, sniffing the air intently. He's not alone. "Hello?"

[ Find Ruslan in town questioning Darrow politics and/or holding his packet or else out in the woods~! He'll be nosing around everywhere, so anywhere is fair game. The baby is new and everyone is welcome. Please come say hi!!! Open until this says otherwise.
